FoxDriver is a replacement printer driver system for FoxPro DOS. It allows developers to produce printer-independent report and label forms that can take advantage of features such as multiple fonts per page, graphic images, advanced graphic capabilities, and soft fonts. FoxDriver 2.0 also includes PLB drivers that can increase the printing speed as much as 75% over previous versions. This is a significant breakthrough for FoxPro developers who need to produce quality printed output in applications without the overhead and increased development time associated with porting to a Windows environment. FoxDriver contains many features not found in FoxPro DOS or Windows, such as embedded codes in memo field output. Also, FoxDriver directly addresses problems that have plagued the FoxPro DOS printer driver system since its inception. Some of these problems have included vertical misalignment with label forms, differing page output between laser and dot matrix printers, fatal errors such as "Transgressed Handle" when using the PLB driver, DRIVER2.PLB, the inability to correctly place graphic lines and boxes when using proportional fonts, and improper justification of proportional fonts. The flexibility of FoxDriver version 2.0 is its strong point. The "internals" of the product have been opened up quite a bit to allow developers to directly modify printer setup and configuration parameters. A dialog has been added to allow developers to select which printers they wish to be available while installing the product. The printer independence has been reinforced by adding the ability to create report-specific or label-specific page layouts while still maintaining a default page layout. Also, the default printer setup information is always restored after printing a report or label form with specific page layout information. Previously, with FoxDriver (and FoxPro's GENPD.APP), a developer was required to reset the default printer setup after running a report form or label form with a report-specific printer setup. Support for barcode fonts has always been an integral part of FoxDriver. Implementing barcoded documents and labels was never easier and is simply a matter of placing the data field and then specifying that you wish that field to print in the barcode font. Currently, FoxDriver supports about 250 printer models. The interface is available in 2 different modes, developer and user. This feature allows a developer to setup FoxDriver in the developer mode and then present the user mode interface to the user for selecting printer setups, output destinations, etc. Both interfaces are seamlessly built into the FoxPro printer driver system and are accessed by documented FoxPro commands and menus.
